Watsonville man arrested after chase with deputies, illegal fireworks found

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said they arrested a 19-year-old man from Watsonville after a chase. It started at around 9:52 p.m., a deputy was going north on Highway 1 in the area of Reservation Road near Marina. He saw a vehicle speeding on north Highway 1 and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle failed to yield and led the deputy on a chase. For safety reasons, the chase was terminated, said a spokesperson for the sheriff's office. The vehicle was located on Cooper Road, and when deputies tried to stop the vehicle again, they drove away from deputies. The vehicle later stopped near Cooper Road and Highway 183. The driver was identified as John Aguirre, 19, of Watsonville, per the spokesperson. He had a passenger in the vehicle that was later released. During a search of the vehicle, deputies found he had a large amount of illegal fireworks. They also located two pounds of marijuana along with packaging and distribution material.Aguirre was booked into Monterey County Jail for felony evading, possession of dangerous fireworks and possession of marijuana for sales, per the spokesperson. His bail was set at $30,000. "The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone that illegal fireworks are not permitted in any part of the county. Safe and sane fireworks may be used in cities where their sale is permitted. These cities include Salinas, Marina, Seaside, King City, Greenfield, Soledad and Gonzales. Safe and Sane Fireworks are NOT permitted in any other part of Monterey County. Possession or discharge of illegal fireworks may lead to you being cited or arrested," added the spokesperson.
